Flash = Popup Happy… With a little help

So I might be WAY behind on this one but I had never found an exact answer as to how it could be accomplished. So I know most of you guys that build flash sites HATE when users click on a link in your site and FireFox or Internet Exploder try to block ur basic links! Well if your like me and can't get that to go away today is your lucky day! Here's what you do. Three easy steps!

1. Embed your site using the SWFObject
2. In the parameters for the SWFObject be sure to use wmode and set it to opaque or transparent.
3. Last thing is you CAN NOT use on Press actions for the buttons. Use on Release instead.

And that's it! Viola! All your links out to external sites etc will no longer be blocked by a popup blocker! :) Enjoy! Oh and Let me know if you find any issues with this.

Currently tested:
FireFox 2.0.0.14, Safari 3.1.1 and IE7

Update:
I have heard yes and nos about the wmode needing to be set. You can play with it and see what works best for you!

Good morning Adobe!

Wow what a morning to wake up to! Adobe has news all over the place. iPhone is getting the Flash Player! Yeah I said it! Well not me but... They did... Wall Street Journal, Engadget, MacRumors and Bit101. ;) How great is this going to be! Its really very interesting to speculate what they will actually do.

So lets think... Ok we all know that the old VM1 is pretty slow compared to the VM2 engine. And the VM1 engine might not cut it on a handheld device since it already has problems on some of our older desktops. Or even on old G4's for that matter. So how is adobe going to get Flash to operate smooth on the iPhone with the VM1 engine? Cause honestly I don't want old flash content to crash my iphone constantly. But I don't want to missout on about 95% of all the Flash content on the web running on the VM1 player. So will they port a version that runs parts of the VM1 engine for video playback and just use the VM2 engine to keep things lite? Or what's the deal going to be? Iis it going to be something we can run AIR apps in only? Hummzzz. Only time will tell. Oh and the last question is will they make iPhone users pay for the player? I really hope not! I might even boycott that decision by Adobe even though I REALLY wants me some Flash on my iPhone!

Ok then onto some other news from the ol Adobe boys this morning...

Adobe Flash Media Rights Management Server? Do what? Well its a way to protect your FLV's in all Flash platform apps. Which is great for MANY content providers all over the web and now the desktop. It even gives some tracking abilities even if the user has downloaded the video! Wow those statistic guys will go berserk for that! Anyway follow the link for more info. This is going to be very neat though and it will help Flash video out a ton when competing with the Quicktime's and Windows Media Player's. Next does anyone know the price point?

This is no monkey business!

Wow, wow and wow. Apple is doing it again. If you weren't aware it was press conference day for Steve Jobs and the new iPhone/iPod Touch SDK kit and the iPhone 2.0 update! This is some pretty exciting news for most of us. If you missed all the nuts and bolts you can visit Engadget or Gizmodo or whoever you can find. :)

What I am excited about here is the iFund! iFund is a move made from a company called KPCB in alignment with Apple to encourage young minds and entrepreneurs to submit business ideas for new products to be built on the SDK! They are willing to help anywhere from 100k to 1.5M!! This is a great great thing and something I am proud of Apple to put out there. Its a chance for everyone to have an opportunity for their dream to come true! Even if you aren't a developer and you don't have the time to build the app on your own. You know have a chance with the right words and right idea to dream HUGE!

I would encourage all of you to step outside yourselves and reach for the stars! Dreams and not impossible they just take some work!

Now get out there and submit proposals to get FLASH on the iPhone! Let's Go!!! HA!

A little touch of the Brand Hatchery!

So about 3 weeks ago I got the idea to put together an iPhone site for my companies portfolio. It really made a lot of sense considering the layout of our current website. But what a great way to share your work with others! The iPhone has opened up a great medium to share your work with others and its right in your pocket! With the help of my friend Rob Edgell at myedgenet.com and my Executive Creative Director Aaron Opsal we put together a slick little site that fits in your pocket. Just visit brandhatchery.com from your iPhone and viola! Its a slick little simple photo gallery. All you need to do is touch each image and it will rotate through the individual slide shows. Enjoy!

I was thinking about this also and wondered... is this the business card of the future? It all most feels that way! And wow its even another way to save paper! Which makes the world a better place all together. I'm all for that! PDF for life! ;)

Is Apple being greedy?

Ok, so I was just chatting with a friend and we were talking about the iPhone SDK. And how apple is most likely going to be selling ALL the apps you all create via iTunes. So both you and them make some money.

Is this why we are not seeing the flash player on the iPhone? Is apple being greedy so we can't make free apps and games for everyone to use, using flash? I don't know but it sures seems that way. I know adobe doesn't want to drag their feet on this so it must be n Apple thing. What do you think?

Adding iPhone favicon (apple-touch-icon.png)

Hey guys so I was bookmarking some sites on my iPhone with the new 1.1.3 update and was noticing that meebo, engadget and gizmodo had custom iPhone icons. So obviously I was like damn that's cool I want one for my site! And come to find out its easy cheesy. Just create a 57x57 png and name it 'apple-touch-icon.png'. Upload it to your desired site folder and walla! There it is. Go bookmark your site and enjoy! And bookmark my site too! Thats that info. Thought I would share. You can see my icon at http://blog.projectx4.com/apple-touch-icon.png. Enjoy!

Info via blog.jotlet.net. He even has a template to create your own quickly. But you will have to crop it if you want it to fit properly.

Software + Donations

Hey guys so I finally got around to buying the Mac Heist Bundle today. In case you haven't heard about it its a neat promotion they are doing to help out some charities and also give away a bunch of cheap software. Alot of it is great software to share with friends who are wanting to learn some highend products but there are a few really great tools for more experienced users. One I am most excited about is CSSEdit. A friend of mine recommended it a while back and I have been meaning to try it out. The package also includes a nice screen capture tool called Snapz Pro X. It will be the true value for me out of this bunch, cause I've been needing a tool for doing some screencasting and since the bundle is $50 bucks and Snapz is usually $70 it was hard to pass up. I can't wait to try them out! Maybe I will post a screen cast or two about them. Oh and last but not least is 1password. This might be a neat tool to toy with but I am skeptical of its security and what I could be giving up if someone was able to access it would be catastrophic.

Mac World 2008

As you all know its macworld time! I'm going to keep my nose in gizmodo and engadget to try and keep up. More news to come!

Update:
Shewww... well its all over and I'm installing the new iPhone firware as I post this! Can't wait to play with the new features. I hope that it will store my login to gmail now! I'm sick and tired of having to login like 60 times a day to check my mail on there. Ok not that much but still. Bleh!

What do we think? We got a new Macbook, the Macbook Air, and also Time Capsule which I cannot wait to get my hands on one. I hate having to have my notebook plugged into a USB to be backing it up with Time Machine. I know, I know pick your battles but damn it is 2008 let's start using all this great technology we have available! Oh and the new Apple TV and the new movie rental deal which sounds ok. New apps for the iPod Touch thats a great addition to that product. Glad they decided on that. But most of all I can't wait to start using the iPhone 1.1.3 updated phone. Since I have one it will affect me the most right away.

Well I guess that's it for now. I'll try and post some more as news unveils today and people get their hands on some of these products.

Oh and last thing? NO CD DRIVE on the macbook air?!?!? WTF? That's going to be something to see how people like that! I mean really? Remote disc drive? Can an office have like 10 machines setup to use one disc drive then? To weird for me right now. But I am glad to see them add the gesture pad. Can you make that a firmware update to my macbook pro? please?!?!?!

Check out the Apple MacBook Air commercial also. Lots of Fun!
